Around 2,000 people are living on the streets in Hamburg. To protect them from the winter cold and wet, the city has set up an emergency winter programme. From the beginning of November to the end of March, around 700 homeless people - men, women and couples - can spend the night there.
However, the offer is limited to overnight accommodation only. Catering for the homeless is not provided by the authorities. Committed citizens have therefore founded an association that supports the winter emergency programme in the overnight shelters on a voluntary basis. The Förderverein Winternotprogramm für Obdachlose e.V. has now been in existence for 15 years.

Diesjahr freut sich das Winternotprogramm für Obdachlose e.V. in Hamburg über unsere Spende: "We started the new season on 1 November 2013 with a growing number of volunteers. We are financed exclusively with the help of donations and your contribution also enables us to reliably provide the residents of the municipal shelter at Friesenstraße 22 with a balanced and varied meal every evening until the end of the winter emergency programme on 31 March. The occupancy of the shelter is currently limited to 400, or 460 residents if necessary," Jessica Jaugstetter from the Förderverein Winternotprogramm für Obdachlose e.V. in Hamburg tells us.
